Can you put a pickleball court in a garage or basement?
Only if the room is at least 44 ft long and 20 ft wide, which is the court itself before any run-off; a shorter room holds a half court at best. Ceiling height is the second limit: we did not find a figure on USA Pickleball’s construction page, and one indoor-flooring maker, Junckers, says to allow at least 18 ft.
What the room has to hold
The court is 20 × 44 ft. USA Pickleball recommends a playing area of 64 × 34 ft and lists 60 × 30 ft as the minimum, so a room that is smaller than the court plus run-off plays below the minimum. The checker also offers a half court of 22 × 20 ft: half the court’s length, net to baseline, with its kitchen, for drills against a rebounder. That layout is our own arithmetic, not an official size.
A worked example: a 24 × 24 ft room
We chose a square 24 × 24 ft room as the example. It is not a typical garage or basement, because we have no sourced figure for those. Enter it in the checker with no obstacles.
| Layout | Needs | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Full court | 44 × 20 ft | Does not fit: 20 ft short on the long side |
| Half court | 22 × 20 ft | Fits, with 1 ft at each end and 2 ft along each side |
The half court is centered, so its corner A, the top-left corner of the lines, sits 1 ft from the left edge and 2 ft from the top edge. Those margins are tight. They are enough to mark the lines, but not much room to move.
The checker reads a room the way it reads a yard. Enter the longer side as the length and the shorter side as the width. The walls are the edge, so run-off cannot extend past them, which is why a room needs the court plus its margins rather than the court alone.
Real rooms have posts, a water heater, a furnace or steps. The checker takes up to five obstacles with their positions and sizes, and it tells you which one blocks a layout if any does.
Ceiling height
Pickleball is played with lobs, and the ceiling has to clear them. Junckers, which makes indoor sports flooring, says a clearance of 18 ft above the playing surface is needed for most indoor spaces. That is one manufacturer’s guidance, not a USA Pickleball rule. We did not find a ceiling height on USA Pickleball’s court construction page, so we cannot give you an official number.
We also have no sourced ceiling height for typical garages or basements. Measure yours from the floor to the lowest beam, pipe, duct or light fitting over the court, and compare it with the figure above before you spend anything.
The floor
A basement or garage floor also has to be flat, dry and safe to run on, and we have no sourced standard for that either. The checker only answers the question of floor area and obstacles.

We left out typical garage and basement dimensions, flooring, lighting and noise, because we have no sourced figures for them. The half-court layout is derived from the court length, and the 24 × 24 ft room is an example we chose.
